IMMIGRATION PROGRAMS  Permanent Residence

Permanent Residence programs allow a person (and his family) a right to come and stay in Canada forever, with almost all the privileges and social benefits as Canadian citizens. Residency conditions have to be satisfied to maintain the Permanent resident (PR) status. After 3 years of stay in Canada, the PR is eligible for citizenship. This is a very broad category encompassing

Economic Classes

By far the important group of immigration programs, this covers immigrants who have the skills to make an economic contribution to Canada. This ability is determined by way of the ‘Points score’ on evaluation grid; a score more than the qualifying score indicates that the profile of the immigrant is in line with that identified by Canada as having potential of successfully establishing in Canada. Since the selection is based, not on the ties to Canada but on economic factors, specified criteria are used for evaluation like Age, education, work experience, Language capabilities, relatives in Canada, etc. The qualifying points can be changed by Canadian government from time to time. People in a wide variety of occupations/ professions, can qualify under this group either as skilled workers or Business persons.

As the name implies, The Skilled worker class covers applicants with either university education (professionals) and technically qualified people (trades people) and many aspiring immigrants identify with this program. Both self-employed and the employed persons can apply as Skilled worker, provided they satisfy the occupational requirements. Additional points are awarded for ‘Arranged employment’ i.e. a job offer from a Canadian employer, which as per the opinion of Service Canada (previously Human Resources & Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)) would have no negative effect on Canadian economy.

Business category has 3 sub-classes; Entrepreneurs, Investors and Self-employed.

  • Entrepreneurs: People with successful business track-record and having sufficient net worth would find it easy to qualify as Entrepreneurs. They have to satisfy ‘conditions’ related to the business performance in Canada, after they receive the PR status.
  • Investors are required to demonstrate that they have sufficient net worth and business experience, and make required investment in an approved fund for 5 years.
  • Self-employed sub-class caters to people who have the ability to make significant contribution in any of the specified economic activity like cultural, athletic or agriculture and economically establish themselves. Farmers, sportspeople, artists, etc. are covered under this category. There is no requirement for a person to be a businessman in the past.

Family Class

This is the group of people admitted to Canada as permanent residents, by virtue of their relationship with and sponsorship by a Canadian citizen/ permanent resident. Generally, wife, dependant children, parents, grandparents and vice-versa can be sponsored under the family class. Children, adopted from abroad are also included in this category. This group is not required to demonstrate the capacity of economic establishment, as their sponsors are responsible for providing for these requirements.
