Passing of Controversial Bill C-50 on Canadian Immigration Policy a step further
The Canadian government's implementation of a controversial new immigration Bill C-50 is likely to become law this week.
This comes with the approval of the budget implementation bill that includes changes to immigration, in the House of Commons. In order for such a bill to be passed, it also needs endorsement from the House and then the senate, which should be done by the weeks end.
This new Canadian immigration policy has received much controversy in the past months, as it enables the minister to decide who should be granted a fast track to Canadian immigration. If someone has skills that are in short supply, they are likely to enter Canada at a much quicker rate than others.
Bill C-50 contains a contentious proposal to give the immigration minister the power to issue "instructions" to her department to give priority to categories of skilled workers deemed in demand. The department would also have the power to refuse applications in other categories.
Opposition parties have denounced the overhaul of the immigration system contained in the bill.
Immigration minister Diane Finley has heavily endorsed the changes, saying that not only will it bring in needed skills, it will also reduce backlog and aid the reunification of families.
The ruling party has made these changes part of a budget bill which if not passed would result in an election, something that is not favoured by the Liberal party, the main opposition.
